Abstract: In the case of local reactivity changes high-temperature reactors of high power and flat structural design such as the PNP 30OO tend to exhibit extensive horizontal power shifts. Among these are also azimuthal xenon oscillations. This paper is concerned with the investigation of possibilities relating to a power distribution control with core rods and alternatively with rods in the side reflector. For this purpose, the spatial effect of unsymmetric control measures is calculated and discussed. Modelling of the reactor in the computer programmes used is described in detail, emphasis is being placed on the representation of control rods inserted at different depths inhorizontal computation models. The dynamic behaviour of the reactor in connection with azimuthal xenon oscillations is calculated in a two-dimensional manner, covering exactly the complex core design in detail with positiondependent power feedback on the neutron spectra. On the basis of results obtained using the control theory, measures are also simulated realistically allowing for operational boundary conditions for the spatial profile of the gas outlet temperature in addition to a simple concept for time-optimal controls. It is shown that for the PNP 3000 the use of a few control rods in the cavity above the pebble bed is sufficient for the control of extensive horizontal power shifts in all cases of practical interest. In addition, it is demonstrated that an annular configuration of rods in the side reflector constitutes an effective instrument for power distribution control in large-size high-temperature reactors.
